Historical/Social Significance :
"There has never been a mutiny in a ship of the United States Navy. The truths of this film lie not in its incidents but in a way a few men meet the crisis of their lives. The time - World War II ..." (Prologue to the movie)

After concessions were made to the Navy about the script the Navy provided the movie by providing ships, planes, combat boats and access to Pearl Harbor and the San Francisco Port.

Synopsis :
Captain Queeg runs a tight ship during World War II, maybe too tight.

    Guided Questions for Viewing :
Assessment questions will be based on the following :
  • Lt. Keefer is often described as the villain in this movie. What do you think? Defend your position with reference to the movie.
  • Do you think the officers were right in relieving Captain Queeg of command?
  • What was your favorite scene in the movie? Describe why you liked it.
  • This movie, made in 1954, can be looked as another movie made in the post-war, Cold War era where people's beliefs in authority had been shaken. Comment on this with reference to the movie.
  • Comment on the following testimony from Captain Queeg :
"Ah, but the strawberries! That's, that's where I had them. They laughed at me and made jokes, but I proved beyond the shadow of a doubt, and with, with geometric logic, that, that a duplicate key to the wardroom icebox did exist. And I would have produced that key if they hadn't pulled the Caine out of action."
  • What does Queeg's statement early in the film have to say about him as a person
"... there are four ways of doing things on board my ship. The right way, the wrong way, the Navy way and my way. They do things my way, we'll get along..."
