This web site is attempting to catalog and review some of the movies that were influenced by the events surrounding Senator Joe McCarthy and by the House Committee on Un-American Activities (HUAC).

Some of the movies are documentaries (Hollywood on Trial, Point of Order, The Legacy of the Hollywood Blacklist), and some are biographical (Tail Gunner Joe, Citizen Cohn, Murrow, Good Night, and Good Luck).

Others are movies that McCarthyism plays an active role in. In Fellow Traveller, The Front, Guilty by Suspicion, The House on Caroll Street, Marathon Man, The Majestic, and The Way We Were, we find people whose lives have been disrupted by McCarthyism.

The McCarthyism influences in On the Waterfront, The Crucible, High Noon and Inherit the Wind have been well documented and makes those very good movies much more interesting.

The most interesting movies are those that may or may not be about McCarthyism but can be used to lead to discussions of it. Is The Invasion of the Body Snatchers an allegory about McCarthyism trying to make us all conform? Is Rear Window about the governments attempt to monitor and control us? Movies like Johnny Guitar, Kiss Me Deadly, Silver Lode, Planet of the Apes and Pleasantville become much more interesting when viewed through a McCarthyism lens.
